Brampton Downtown Core

About The Project

The City of Brampton required a survey of existing conditions in the downtown core around Queen & Main, including a partial survey of Brampton GO Station.  Due to the busy nature of this area for both pedestrian and vehicle traffic, mobile scanning was the most effective way to capture the downtown data.  Conventional survey methods would have required at least 5 times the amount of field time to capture the same amount of data,

Control was tied into City monuments and set using GPS and total station.  Where control points were set, targets were painted on the ground to use as reference in the scans.  The only areas conventionally surveyed were the alleyways between buildings where the mobile scanning vehicle could not drive.

All roadways were scanned using the mobile scanner affixed to the back of a Promaster van.  The mobile scanning operation was completed at night, to ensure there were less cars on the road that could block survey items.  At Brampton GO Station, the stationary scanner was set up in various locations to capture everything.

Survey linework was extracted out of the resulting point cloud to prepare base plan drawings.  The point cloud DTM was also combined with the alleyway surveys to produce one complete DTM at site.
